Here is the third mix in my series ‘Grime Aint Dead’. This one is a personal favourite of mine, with very tight mixes & a monster selection. Featuring some of the best tunes & mcs/producers in Grime such as Spooky, Low Deep, Audio Pusha Men, Rival, Dot Rotten, Dexplicit, Kozzie, Exo Remedy, Tre Mission & many more! Defo a mix to not let pass you.
For my next interview I caught up with one of the scenes top ‘new wave’ mc’s Nico Lindsay to find out about his new release with Exo Remedy ’On My Mind’ which is being released this monday so make sure you go & support that.
Last year was a good year for you, you’ve put the work in & are now a respected name in Grime, but what got you wanting to become a Grime mc/artist in the first place?
To be honest I use to hate grime when I first heard it in like 2003 then my boys started spitting and I was like rahh grimes far from a dead genre let me try a ting, started going radio and practice sets in youth clubs and what not and since then I haven’t been able to leave it alone.
So Monday we see your first Release ‘On My Mind’ alongside one of the scenes top producers Exo Remedy How did this collaboration come about?
I wanted to make a CD to release but I was planning it behind the scenes and because I was already working with Exo Remedy I contacted him for a couple beats for it, but he also wanted to make a CD as well but with just one Mc so I thought yea lets do this.
Whats the story behind ‘On My Mind’ is it literally stuff thats on your mind at the minute & you put it to paper or is there a deeper meaning to it?
The title’s more of a reflection from the tunes, the concepts are based on things I may think when a particuliar situation occurs, or just things I might just be randomly thinking when I got to much time on my hands.
From what I’ve heard of the sampler the tunes are ’Real Talk’ tunes rather than ‘shank shank’ bars. Why do you choose real talk over violent bars & what inspires you to write them?
I feel like certain things need to be said and I feel like not a lot of people are saying them. The majority of violent talking mc’s recycle concepts, and then when they try to branch of to the mainstream people look at em like “ I thought u was a road man doe” its a good way to build up a quick buzz but it carrys a lot of baggage and unless your that kinda character I wouldn’t advice any mc/rapper to talk about things they dont know.
How did you choose the beats for this, as it must have been hard with Exo’s catalouge of beats?
It was a zip folder full of BANGERS. I was like wow lol but just selected all the ones I thought would be good for me to vocal since a lot of the beats from On My Mind ain’t really beats you usuallly hear me vocal but big up Exo Remedy cause he produces good music Is this going to be a one off with you or will you be working with Exo again for another one or with any other producers?
For the moment who knows me and exo will defiantnly be working quite a bit this year along with other producers such as Anish Bhatt from High Frequency, The majority of Beat Creatures and more.
You’ve featured on quite a few MC’s mixtapes/cds who do you enjoy working with the most & get a good vibe goin on in the studio?
I enjoy working with Trim theres always a good vibe in the studio when we’re getting to work.
If you could work with any artist in the world wether it be an mc or singer who would it be & why?
It would have to be either Nas, Talib Kweli or Bilal they make very powerful music.
I heard you on Spookys show the other day on UrbanFM, everyone did alot. Do you think the scene is missing regular shows with mc’s reaching & will you be reaching radio alot more this year?
The scene defiantly is missing out on a lot of radio sets. Two years back you could go on grime forum and it felt like every 2 days there was a new radio set you ain’t heard, now its more based on actual release’s and videos but radio is essential if your an MC espcially if nobodys heard of you.
Do you have a Mixtape/Album to drop this year as we are yet to see a whole one from you?
Yeah im currently in the works with that, the release date is going to be unkown for the minute but as soon as I get that you will see me promoting that all over the place.
What are your plans for the future music wise?
I just want make music for a living but good music. I hear a lot of tunes and they feel like they have no feeling just vocals over a beat not something deeper to get you in the zone, but I wish to push myself more out there and become more established.
Any Shout outs anything you wish to add?
